Battle for Lordaeron – Alliance and Horde Scenarios (Spoilers)

The Battle for Lordaeron scenarios, content coming in the 8.0 pre-patch, are now available to preview on the Battle for Azeroth alpha. While some key cinematics were withheld from players, we could play through most of the scenario and witness the plot first-hand.

Story spoilers.

While the exact details and character motivations of the story are unknown, we know the Horde launches an attack on Teldrassil, successfully burning the world tree. The Alliance then retaliates on Lordaeron. We have datamined lots of tantalizing snippets of broadcast text related to Lordaeron:

Horde Scenario

In this scenario, the Horde fight back against the Alliance, evacuating the Undercity and then turning to more controversial measures like using Blight to kill Alliance soldiers and raise them as ghouls. The Blight also kills wounded Horde soldiers in the way. Saurfang is opposed to the idea, stating:

Soldiers of the Horde! Your brothers and sisters lie wounded on the battlefield! There is no honor in this victory if we abandon our own!

However, Sylvanas urges the soldiers on:

Slay them all, champions! Mar my words, King Anduin and his army did not come here for their amusement. They mean to destroy us! Show them no mercy, for they would show you none in return!

A placeholder cinematic occurs, which is likely Jaina breaching the walls of Lordaeron:

– Jaina Arrives! Her forces successfully blast through the wall of Lordaeron Keep! And btw it was *totally* cool.

As Sylvanas regroups, all the faction leaders follow her…except Saurfang is missing. The Horde and Alliance leaders then face off directly, including the Void Elves fighting their former ruler Lor’themar and the sisters Alleria and Sylvanas on opposite sides.

The Horde are not successful and fall back to the keep. Here we find Saurfang waiting:

Saurfang: I had to see it for myself. Was this your plan all along? Is this how you meant to achieve victory? This…honorless travesty?
Sylvanas: Honor means nothing to a corpse, Saurfang. You have the luxury of underestimating death, but it is something with which I am intimately familiar. Maybe you don’t care if your people die so long as it is honorable. But to me, this Horde is worth saving. Anyone who disagrees does not deserve to stand among us. So die your warrior’s death, High Overlord Saurfang. It means little to me. Perhaps I will raise your broken body to serve me once more. Or perhaps you will have a chance to say hello to your son.

Sylvanas walks into the keep and here another cutscene takes place:

– Sylvanas is waiting in the throne room when Anduin arrives. Anduin offers her the chance to surrender. Instead, she blows up the entire city. I mean, what did you expect?

Alliance Scenario

The scenario starts off with the Alliance at a disadvantage until Jaina shows up and blasts through the walls of Lordaeron. The Alliance continue to press their advantage, finally meeting up with Alleria Windrunner, the Void Elves, and High Tinker Mekkatorque.

Sylvanas retreats and we must chase her in a gyrocoptor. When we get to the keep, we find Saurfang waiting for us:

Anduin: Stand aside, Saurfang. This war is not yours to bear alone, and I have no honor in killing you.
Saurfang: Your father was a man of honor, boy. You know nothing of the sort.
Saurfang: I will NEVER stand down! I eat, sleep, and live by the sword. What price have you paid for your people?
Anduin: My father gave everything for the Alliance. The question is, are you willing to do the same?
Saurfang: MY LIFE FOR THE HORDE!

We fight Saurfang and are ultimately victorious. However instead of killing him, as he desires, we imprison him and take him to Stormwind. We then move on to confronting Sylvanas, but she has other plans in store:

– Sylvanas is waiting in the throne room when Anduin arrives. Anduin offers her the chance to surrender. Instead, she blows up the entire city. I mean, what did you expect?
