Countdown to Amazon’s UK Sale

We’re counting down the days until Amazon Prime Day 2019, and Amazon has already started dropping a handful of great teaser deals to whet our appetites.

This will be the biggest Prime Day in its five-year history of the event. For the first time ever, we’re getting a full 48 hours of Amazon-based deals. Perhaps Amazon Prime Days would be a better name, eh?

We’re here to guide you through this extended sales bonanza. Our team of bargain hunters will sift through the price history of each deal we encounter to see if it really is worth the trouble. If it is, then we’ll consider it for inclusion on this page.

So what exactly is this Amazon Prime Day that has the internet all in a tizzy? Allow us to kick things of with a quick explainer:

Here’s what you’ll get if you stick with us through Amazon’s gigantic sale:

  • The best deals: leading up to the day and throughout the event itself, we’ll be filling this page with the very best deals that Amazon has to offer.
  • Checked by our experts: our product experts will check the price history of each deal we feature, assessing how prices have changed in the run up to Prime Day.
  • Tailored to you: we know which pieces of tech our readers are most interested in, and we’ll be using that knowledge to inform the type of products we cover – no fluff, just the best stuff.

For now, we’re focusing on explaining the background to the day, to help you prepare, as well as bring you a few of the better pre-Prime Day deals we’ve noticed so far. So… on with the show – take a look at Today’s best pre-Prime Day Deals.

When is Amazon Prime Day?

This year’s event kicks off midnight of July 15, and runs for a full 48 hours. That said, a bunch of early deals have already landed.

Our advice: sign up for an Amazon Prime membership. Amazon is offering a full 30-day free trial, which you can cancel before you get charged. But even if you’ve already claimed this in the past, you can sign up for a month for just £7.99.

Trust us: you’ll make that money back in no time with the deals that are coming your way.

Amazon Prime Day 2019

What is Amazon Prime Day?

Prime Day was originally a way of driving new subscribers to Amazon Prime, and while this is less of a factor in places like the US these days (as nearly everyone there is a Prime member), it’s still the case as Amazon Prime rolls out to other countries.

  • This year there are Prime Day sales in the UK, USA, Spain, Singapore, Netherlands, Mexico, Luxembourg, Japan, Italy, India, Germany, France, China, Canada, Belgium, Austria, Australia and the UAE. It’s a global affair all right.

  • From a practical standpoint, Prime Day is your best chance to pick up a host of serious online bargains before November’s Black Friday/Cyber Monday festivities.

  • This year’s event is the biggest yet, and involves a full Taylor Swift concert, an e-sports tournament in association with Twitch, and plenty more.

  • Of course, this all amounts to nothing if you don’t have an Amazon Prime membership. Luckily for you though, you can get in on the action at no monetary cost as Amazon is offering a full 30-day free trial for the service (which you can cancel before you get charged), so really – there’s no excuse not to sign up.

Amazon Kindle Deals

Amazon’s e-reader has taken the market by storm, and the Kindle ecosystem is to blame for the rise of e-books over the last few years. If you can’t already tell, we’re huge fans of the Amazon Kindle (in all its shapes and sizes), and it’s the perfect buy for any bookworm – or even someone who wants to get into reading.

Amazon Echo Deals

Whether you’re onboard with AI or not, there’s no denying that the Amazon Echo range has become a staple of most people’s décor, with Alexa literally becoming a household name. Prime Day always brings some significant discounts to the Echo Range, and this year is no different. Our favourite pick is the offer currently available on the stylish Echo Dot.

Amazon Fire Tablet Deals

Bringing affordable tablets to the masses, Amazon’s Fire Tab range is perfect for anyone who wants to have their own personal tablet device but doesn’t want to beak the bank in the process. With variants available for kids, adults and content bingers, you can be sure that there will be a Prime Day deal to suit your wallet.

Amazon Fire TV Stick Deals

Amazon’s very own content streaming device, the Fire TV Stick, was one of the best selling products during last year’s Prime Day sale, and there’s a good reason why. With the ability to connect to Prime Video, Netflix, BBC iPlayer and more, the Fire TV Stick is one of the most versatile streaming sticks you can buy, making it the ‘one to watch’ during Prime Day 2019.

Best Amazon Headphone Deal

From Sony to Bose, there’s a ton of stellar headphone options that’ll receive major discounts over Amazon Prime Day, but for now we’ve highlighted our favourite from the offers available right now. Sony’s WH-1000xM3 is our favourite pair of noise cancelling headphones yet, and with the ability to buy them for far less than their £300+ price point, makes this deal an absolute no brainer.

Best Amazon Soundbar Deal

Sick of the lacklustre audio quality emanating from you TV? It might be time to pick up a dedicated sound in the Prime Day sale – but if you can’t wait to upgrade, then you should take a gander at our current favourite bargain. The Sonos Beam scored a full 10/10 score here at Trusted Reviews, so it should come as no surprise that this new low price is just too good to be true (so it’s better to bag it while it’s still around).

Buy now: Sonos Beam for just £369 (was £399) at Amazon

Best Amazon TV Deal

Due to their usual high price point, TVs tend to be one of the most popular products of any Prime Day sale. Given how quickly Amazon’s TV offers can sell out, it’s worth snapping up one these early deals before the bonanza begins. Anyone who has gazed upon the beauty of QLED knows that it’s a huge leap in terms of home cinema, which is why this huge discount on Cello’s C55QLED is a great shout.

Best Amazon Laptop Deal

Looking to upgrade your work laptop or simply want something better for the next school year? Whatever your reasons are for wanting a great laptop deal, we’ve got you covered. When it comes to having a lightweight laptop that can get the job done, very few models can outdo the MacBook Air, so you might want to give this massive price drop a gander while you still can.

Best Amazon Smart Home Deal

Having a largely automated home, run by a futuristic AI programme once seemed like a pipe dream, and an expensive one at that. Thanks to the recent surge of affordable smart home tech, the cost of bringing your home into the 21st century has never been more palatable. Making things even better though is the offer currently available on the Hive Active Smart Thermostat, which in itself can save you up to £130 a year on your heating bill. In that context, this deal pays for itself.

Best Amazon Wearables Deal

Can’t decide between an Apple Watch, a Fitbit or a Samsung Galaxy Watch? Picking which wearable/fitness tracker to go with can be a tricky affair, one that often boils down to your specific needs and what you want to get out of a handy little assistant on your wrist. Here’s something that might make it easier – the Fitbit Ionic, which is a fantastic blend of smartwatch and fitness tracking features – can now be had with a £50 saving just before Prime Day.

Best Amazon Phone Deal

Trying to stay with your current network provider whilst hopping over to a new handset can often be a costly and tedious affair. In a world where forking over £1000 for a SIM-free phone is a thing, bank accounts quiver at the mere mention of the word ‘upgrade’. Of course, sales events like Amazon Prime Day are a great chance to forgo hefty price tags and bag yourself a bargain. Ahead of Prime Day, Amazon has discounted the Xiaomi Mi 9 (10/10 at Trusted Reviews) by a whopping £100.

Best Amazon Vacuum Cleaner Deal

Vacuum cleaners might not seem like the most exciting of tech gadgets, but having a good one can seriously change your household routine, and often make you realise that your chores have been made far more difficult by out of date designs. Surely then there’s no better time to invest in a brand new Dyson, Shark or even G Tech vacuum cleaner than when the deals start dropping? Luckily for you, some already have, just like this substantial discount on the stylish Dyson V7 cordless vacuum cleaner.

Best Amazon Camera Deal

Let’s face it, it doesn’t matter how good the manufacturers say they are, smartphone cameras will never match up to their full-fat counterpart. With great photography being the main focus of their design, cameras can give you far more bang for your buck, but even more so if you grab a camera during the Prime Day sale. If you just can’t wait until then, the excellent Canon 2000D – which is a brilliant DSLR for budding amateur photographers – is now going for one of its lowest prices yet ahead of Amazon Prime Day.

Amazon Prime Day 2019

Should I wait for Black Friday 2019?

Amazon Prime Day isn’t actually the ultimate Amazon deals event. That would still be Black Friday 2019, which takes up a whole week later in the year. Which begs the question: should you wait for Black Friday instead of taking advantage of Amazon Prime Day?

No. We don’t think you should. The biggest reason not to is that Black Friday is still months away. Are you really going to go without that item you’ve had your eye on, which has been heavily discounted for Amazon Prime Day, just because it might be featured in an even bigger deal in November?

Also, while Amazon’s Black Friday event is certainly bigger than Amazon Prime Day by most metrics, the best deals will be found in July’s event. As Fortune reported last year, “76% of the deals on Prime Day 2017 were better than Black Friday”. Now’s the time.

Should I Sign-Up for Amazon Prime?

If you’ve never signed up for Amazon Prime before then you’re in luck, you’ll be eligible for a free one-month trial. You’ll get all the benefits of being a Prime Member, including one-day delivery, a subscription to Prime Video and of course, access to the deals of Prime Day, and it won’t cost you a penny.

In order to get the most out of your free trial, we recommend starting your membership at the beginning of July, giving you plenty of time to binge some of Amazon’s original TV shows through Prime Video, enjoy the Prime Day sales on July 15th and 16th, then you’ll have the rest of the month left to binge some more.

If you decide to stay longer, you’ll receive the usual Amazon Prime benefits but for £7.99/month. Those include next-delivery on “millions of items” according to Amazon, Prime Originals – so that’s a Netflix style streaming service where you can watch Amazon commissioned shows (read our Prime Originals verdict here), discounted Kindle books, and access to Prime Video. Read more about what Prime members get in our exhaustive guide.

What Prime Day deals happened last year?

We’ve taken a look back at Amazon’s own reporting on the biggest sellers of Prime Day last year, and you can bet your bottom dollar that these results will be influencing the deals of 2019.

The best sellers worldwide were the Fire TV Stick with Alexa Voice Remote and the Echo Dot. Prime Day last year was also the biggest event ever for Echo devices with screens (so the Echo Show and Echo Spot), as well as for Fire TV devices and Kindle e-readers.

More generally, the most popular categories last Amazon Prime Day were Toys, Beauty products, PCs and computer accessories, Apparel and Kitchen. Customers purchased more than five million items in each. How about the UK specifically? Here in Blighty, the best sellers included a Bosch Cordless Drill, Philips Hue Personal Wireless Lighting Light strip, and Finish Dishwasher Tablets. We do love our dishwashers.

What are Amazon Lightning Deals?

As ferocious as they’re name implies, Amazon Lightning Deals offer some of the retailer’s most significant discounts. While lightning deals do appear throughout the year, their intensity (and the number of products they cover) increase throughout the Prime Day season. What’s the catch you might ask?

Well, unlike other deals featured on Amazon, lightning deals are only available for very short windows of time, making them very tricky to pick up.

As we move closer to Prime Day, Amazon’s lightning deals will appear on the main Prime Day page (click here). Of course, if you don’t have the time to be watching Amazon all day, our twitter pages (@TrustedReviews and @TrustedDeals) will feature the best lightning deals as and when they appear.

Which other companies are competing with Prime Day?

Sure, Amazon might have the monopoly on Prime Day itself, but when prices are being slashed, you can be sure that other retailers will be doing all they can to compete. While we don’t know the specific details of what the other major retailers have up their sleeves, you can definitely expect some price-matching deals from the likes of Currys PC World, Argos, John Lewis and more.

What do you get with Amazon Prime?

Given the sheer amount of stuff that comes with the service, a better question would be, ‘what don’t you get with Amazon Prime?’. The main sell of Amazon’s exclusive service is the ability to get next-day delivery on almost all the products featured via the online retailer.

Next up, you get Prime Video at no extra cost – this is Amazon’s streaming service and a direct competitor to Netflix. With award winning original shows such as The Marvellous Mrs Maisel and Mr Robot, it’s a great little freebie that also gives you plenty of stuff to binge when you get home from work.

As you’ve no doubt read so far, you’ll need Prime in order to access the discounts happening throughout Prime Day. This is also the case for some of the early Prime Day deals that have already gone live, including three months of Kindle Unlimited for no cost whatsoever.
