Dad Develops ‘Annoying’ App To Prevent Son Ignoring His Texts

There’s nothing more aggravating than your kid ignoring your texts or calls. Sometimes, they’re out with friends and can’t be bothered to get back to mom or dad. Other times, they’re simply goofing off on social media and don’t think twice about sending you straight to voicemail.

One parent came up with a clever way to prevent his son from ignoring him.

Nick Herbert came up with the app ReplyASAP and launched a version for Android phones on Google Play back in August 2017. The freely available app locks your kid’s phone, rendering it completely unusable, until they reply to their concerned parents. There’s even a setting allowing the app to sound an alarm to get the distracted teen’s attention, even if the phone is in silent mode. Genius, right?

The U.K.-based dad explained that the app was “born out of personal frustrations with current messaging apps” after he bought his teen son Ben a smartphone.

“When [Ben] started secondary school I bought him a smart phone so that I could contact him and he could contact me (obviously not while at school),” he explained on the app’s website. “However, what I thought was a solution turned into a different problem. Because the phone was ‘smart,’ he could play games and watch videos on it. So invariably he keeps his phone on silent so I wouldn’t know. As such when I try and contact him he rarely answers, either because he doesn’t hear the phone, or because (and I’ve finally had to admit this to myself) he may be embarrassed to speak to his Dad in front of his friends.”

Currently, the app is only available for Android phones, though an iOS version that works with Apple devices is expected to be coming soon.

In the video, you can hear more from Nick about how his clever and “annoying” app functions.
