How to download the first iOS 12 beta right now

The first preview of iOS 12 is already to download, just moments after its introduction at Apple’s WWDC 2018 event in San Jose.

The great news is all devices currently able to run iOS 11 can update to the new software, even if you’re using 2013’s iPhone 5s. One of Apple’s major selling points for iOS 12 is its ability to boost performance on those older phones, which we’re sure will delight many users loyal to their elderly devices.

However in order to take iOS 12 for an early spin, you will need to be part of either Apple’s Developer Program (which costs $99), or sign up for the public beta program, which is free.

If you aren’t planning on developing apps for the platform, we’d obviously recommend the latter, which is available for both the iPhone and iPod touch.

How to install iOS 12 beta

To sign up for the public beta program, you’ll need to go to Apple’s dedicated website and log in with your Apple ID.

Once you’ve registered your phone or tablet you’ll need to install a profile that’s sent to your iOS device. Following a quick restart, you’ll be able to access the iOS 12 beta via the usual means of updating the software over the air.

Just head to Settings > General > Software Update and you should see the beta waiting for you.

Apple advises (as do we) that you don’t use your primary iPhone or iPad for testing out the iOS 12 beta. Beta software is usually jam-packed with incomplete features and buggy apps that are still in development.

However, it’s perfect if you have a secondary device knocking around and you’re keen to get a first look at what iOS 12 has to offer. Apple will likely continue adding apps and features over time, so don’t expect to access everything immediately.
