Intriguing, I wonder if there are any plans to replace the sharding system in retail wow with this new layering technology.

I feel like this is going to be WAY better than sharding. REALLY hyped.

I feel like that is very unlikely, mostly because after the first few months on Classic, a lot of players will say “F this I’m outta here”, and we’ll end up with more players on live. Also unless they do TBC stuff, when the last phase is out, of course there will still be so much to do, but more players will leave because of the lack of new content.

“However, this technology also separates players and creates awkward phasing situations where players or NPCs suddenly vanish from your screen.” I wondered why this happened for so long. I now have my answer.

This is better than sharding but not much better. I hope they disable it for RP realms at least as its a complete detriment to the experience. With this layering system, you may never get to see a group of people because you ended up on different “layers”, so while it solves some issues, there’s still the biggest issue there.

Please replace sharding with layering on retail, cause sharding fn chucks.

I agree. Although, they have to do something, especially on launch. There will just be such a large number of people playing.

RP realms usually have a lot less players anyway, so they may not need it.

Don’t forget everyone’s favourite phasing issue; Vanishing resource nodes the moment you’re within 10 yards of them!

So its the same as phasing but not cross realm and not adaptive…. They really just came up with a fancy name for it. That said as long as its only used at the very beginning I’m okay with it.

Being non-crossrealm and non-adaptive are two very big differences IMO.

Tell me about it! Treasure chests dissappearing right in your face, rare ones. Nodes? i can survive, but treasures that i cant get ever.
An example is in Spires of Arrak (Draenor) center map, on a road there is a broken cart with a purple chest and you can SEE it from afar but as soon as you enter in 40 yards of it it goes phasing…

If the node don’t reappear when you move away, the node might have just time out. With the new shared node, it stay up a while after being first looted, then vanish without warning, even if you are gathering from it. An other signal it as nothing to do with phasing or sharding is if the mobs around don’t vanish and reappear too.

I foresee a lot of people blaming all their woes on Layer even if most have nothing to do with it, just like Phase / Shard. People who cannot differentiate the two is already bad enough.

As someone who spent 6+ years on Wyrmrest Accord and Moon Guard, both high pop RP servers – yes they do. But the way sharding is implemented is very flawed and really wasn’t designed with RPers in mind. No surprise there. I doubt they will disable any of this just as they didn’t for RPers in Legion.

When I first started Vanilla in mid 2005, I remember having a terrible time with the first quest to kill Kobolds. I must have hit level 4 by pure grinding before I realized the exact name of the mob mattered. I was killing the harder, higher level Kobolds because everyone else kept killing the level 1 versions I actually needed to finish that quest. All I was seeing of those guys was corpses, but they all looked so much alike that I didn’t notice there was a difference. I remember wondering what kind of weird bug I’d found that my kills weren’t registering lol.r
r
I’m glad they have a solution that is not full phasing/sharding to deal with that problem. I’m sure the first few weeks will be bonkers regardless, but this should help a great deal!
