Many of us know and love Mayim Bialik in her role as Amy Farrah Fowler on The Big Bang Theory. But she’s not just an amazing actress, she’s a mom too.
While she may be on a wildly successful TV show, Mayim is a mom of two who wanted to immerse herself in mom culture.
When she was a new mom, Mayim attended a moms’ group at a local department store and was excited to share stories and learn with other moms. But the actress revealed in a video that she felt like she didn’t belong there. “I instantly felt out of place,” she said in a video posted on Facebook. “I used cloth diapers, I didn’t use pacifiers or bottles. I didn’t have fancy clothes — neither did my baby.”
Mayim went on to say that the moms were encouraged to brag about everything their baby did. “Everything was a competition,” she said. “These were not my people. I left in tears.”
She admitted that the moms’ group was so bad that it turned her off from ever going to another one again. “What I witnessed at this moms’ group is something that’s not unusual at all,” she said. “I would say that it’s the norm…it’s a pattern of mothering and being — moms are so competitive!”
As many people know, Mayim is a neuroscientist, so she came up with a theory as to why she thinks moms are competitive: “It’s not enough to be a mom, you have to be the best mom.”
In the video below, Mayim’s Blossom co-star Jenna von Oÿ talks about Mayim as a mother.
