Kathy and Bill have been married for 30 years. Bill, who was a state trooper for 20 years, has been highly involved with the Make-A-Wish Foundation and has helped raise over $250,000.
After Bill was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer that had spread to his liver, he endured grueling rounds of chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery, then another round of chemo.
Thankfully, Bill has been in remission for four years.
When it came time for Bill’s 60th birthday, Kathy had recently retired, and their teenage daughter, Kelly, had just graduated high school. The family decided to celebrate only one of these milestones — Kelly’s graduation — which meant they never officially celebrated Bill’s birthday.
So for his 61st birthday, Kathy wanted to pull out all the stops. “Bill has spent so much time working for Make-A-Wish and helping others that I think it’s time that we came and celebrated Bill.”
At the same time, the Rachael Ray Show was highlighting 13 remarkable real-life people who have helped make the world a better place. When the producers heard Bill’s story, they wanted him to be a part of their segment and make his birthday unforgettable.
His surprise 61st birthday party was complete with a disco dance floor and a celebrity chef who filled his home with delicious food. In the video below, Bill walks into his home and breaks down in tears when he sees his loved ones gathered around.
But then Kathy brought Bill outside to their garage for the real surprise…
