Welcome to a new article series that we at Wowhead are trying out! Here at Wowhead we love art, every and all forms of it – drawing, painting, sculpting, woodworking, metalworking, jewelry making, papercrafting, badge making, everything under the sun.
In an effort to share with you all what we love what our wonderful community does we are trying out what we like to call “Wowhead’s Artist’s Corner”! About once a month we will feature an artist and their craft. This article will feature a small blurb about themselves so that you can get to know them just a bit, show off their art, and learn more about what they do. And of course, there will be a special giveaway for one of their items!
This month we will be featuring:
We spoke with Cally Kari Shokka and asked her to tell us a little about herself.
“Hi! I’m Cally Kari Shokka and I’m kinda new to the WoW art scene even though I’ve been playing since Vanilla, and I’m a plushmaker of questionable talent. I’m known mostly for making these little round squishmonsters called ‘Puff Puggles’. Though, I made Transformers themed ones for the longest time called ‘Puggleformers’, too.
How I started sewing is the greatest evil origin story ever told. Eons ago, itty bitty me went to an anime convention with a little ‘make a doll’ class. Little me made the simplest little thing, tossed it in a closet, and then lost it for many years. When my brother moved out, I had to clean out my closets to move to his much bigger room and there we found a little one-armed plush stick figure my sister immediately dubbed Dobby The One Armed House Elf. Now, my dad is one of those jack-of-all-trades kind of guys, so I asked him to teach me the basics of sewing to see if I could give Dobby a new arm, and that, combined with youtube tutorials and Japanese craft books kept me going and I just… Kept on sewing.
The Puff Puggles were actually one of the first things I ever made, though the early ones looked pretty bad. A friend of mine wanted me to make one based on a Transformers character and that’s when the Puggleformers were born. I had enough interest in these little round happy faces to just keep making them. Even got to go to Transformers conventions a few times with a table. Colored my own banners with glitter crayons, it was actually pretty great having what looked like a 3rd grade art project next to actual professionals. It’s been just a really fun adventure with these little guys, seeing how far I can stretch the simple round shape to really look like all these diverse characters; it’s a challenge to fit the primary details in. I haven’t wanted to make more complex bodies just because making them like this is so much fun.
I’m now branching out and making Blizzard-inspired ones, though the dragon aspects have been getting the most interest, so I’ve so far just made a bunch of those. And Illidan. Because Illidan.
I sell the Puff Puggles online in a whole lot of different varities. Zombies, gingerbread, bats, even little flower pot mushrooms ones.
Random trivia time:
– I predate Tsum-Tsums. My mom believes Disney stole the shape idea from me for their Tsum-Tsums. It’s incredibly funny.
– Any Puff Puggles based on humans kind of look like pigs in toupees. I also find this incredibly funny.
– Hi! I’m Breel from Moon Guard server! Hi!
– Cally isn’t my actual name, it’s just the name I use on the internet. :P”
